The Life of a Firefighter

Lots of people wonder why I chose to be a firefighter
and sometimes I wonder that same thing myself. I don't
know for sure. Maybe it's just the satisfaction of
helping people. It's a great job in that aspect. It's
amazing but people are always glad to see us arrive.
*smile* Even though you get great satisfaction because
you can be of help in such an adverse situation, it is
also a very dangerous job. In fact it is considered by
most authorities and statisticians to be the most dangerous
profession in the world. "You guys sure have guts"
some say. Others have said, "What brave people you
are". And still others, "Y'all are just plain crazy".
They are all correct. But the truth of the matter is when
it's time to do what I was trained to do, the danger never
enters my mind. I just know that there is a job to be done
and not any time to waste in doing it. Time is so crucial
in our line of work. Even a few seconds can save someones
life or for that matter even my own. "A Glory Job"
some have called it. Not really. Just something I enjoy
doing because I know it is helping someone. To me it's more
of an honor to be able to help people in such dire need than
it is to receive glory for the job done. After all it is what
I get paid to do. I just feel honored that I was chosen for
this job by the great City of Jackson, that I love so much.
Listed below are some excerpts that I have found on the web.
Short stories and poems about the fire service that explains
my feelings for the best job a person could possibly ask for.
Please take time to read them as they will enlighten you as to
what we encounter from day to day as well as what is going on
in our minds that so very few people actually realize.
